Madeline Fink and Juliet Babyak attended the 43rd annual Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp in Steamboat Springs, Colorado from July 13-18. Hannah White also attended as she was voted back as an ambassador after attending as a camper last year. Joining their peers from Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and Wyoming, approximately 90 youth learned about the cooperative principles at the week-long, educational retreat. Juliet was one of the students elected to return next year as a camp ambassador! As an ambassador, she will facilitate camp leadership activities and serve as a role model for the students selected to attend camp next summer.
Q&A With the Students
Q. What was your favorite part of Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp (CYLC) and why?
Juliet: My favorite part of camp this year was meeting new people, making friends, and sharing really fun experiences with them all week.
Maddie: My favorite part of the trip was being able to meet, interact, and connect with other students my age, all while learning and experiencing new things.
Hannah: My favorite part about this trip was rafting. This activity gave us an opportunity to get outside of our comfort zones and really get to know each other.
Q. What did you learn about electric cooperatives?
Juliet: Electric cooperatives are way more interesting than I originally thought and I had a great time getting to know the amazing counselors and other employees that all worked at co-ops and taught us about the variety of careers available.
Maddie: Electric cooperatives undoubtedly provide the most practical and efficient way of dealing with electricity in communities.
Q. What do you think about CYLC as a whole?
Juliet: CYLC was a really awesome place to get to know others from states around Colorado as well as having lots of fun and learning new things! I can’t wait until next year.
Maddie: CYLC enabled me to learn and experience so much in such practical, useful fields and allowed me to broaden my perspective on my own community. It was an incredible opportunity that gifted me with skills and memories that I will take with me for years to come!
Hannah: My CYLC experience has been one I will never forget! I’m so grateful for the time I have spent there and I cannot wait to apply my strengthened leadership skills to college and beyond.
